Long Lake on Donner Summit
By Michelle Portesi
Well, Labor Day has passed, and our ‘official’ Summer Season is over…or is it? The tourists seem to vacate the area en masse, even though this is one of the most perfect times to visit Lake Tahoe and Truckee. It’s not as crowded, the temperatures are a little cooler and there’s still tons of fun things to do! Toward that end of keeping you up to date on what’s happening in the area, our Events Calendar for September is up. This week alone sees two annual events, The Autumn Food and Wine Jubilee at Northstar and Trails and Vistas at Claire Tappaan revisiting the Area. If you’re willing to travel a bit nearby for a fun experience, Carson City has a ‘Ghost Walk’ to learn about the interesting history and characters of the area and Grass Valley is holding their annual Celtic Festival.
In addition, plenty of Summer’s events and vendors are still up and running. Most of the Farmer’s Markets will continue until October and jet ski’s, bikes and paddle boards etc, can still be rented. While many of the waterfalls and creeks have evaporated to a trickle, or disappeared entirely, hiking still offers plenty of beautiful vistas without the heat and the crowds, and you can’t go wrong doing it anywhere near one of the many lakes in the Tahoe basin.
Locals tend to work their tails off in the summer and before you know it, summer is gone. One of the locals laments is ‘We don’t really get to enjoy summer until fall’, so now is the time to get out there and enjoy some of the simple pleasures we live here for before the snow flies! Hopefully we’ll get a normal winter this year sometime around Thanksgiving …instead of St. Patrick’s Day like last year.
