Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival and July Events Calendar

By Michelle PortesiIt’s officially summer when the ‘Bard on the Beach’ returns to town. The Shakespeare at Sand Harbor runs through August 27. This year’s Shakespeare play offers a drama this time: ‘Macbeth. For something on the lighter side, the other featured play is the musical ‘Beehive’. Pack a picnic or place an order for the on site gourmet meals. It’s all good. Even better when you’re dining with Lake Tahoe’s Sand Harbor as your backdrop.

Monday nights are dark for those two plays, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some top notch entertainment to be had.

If you’re like me, and you’ve lived here for awhile, you’ve seen Shakespeare performed in any number of unique and colorful ways, including a wild west version of ‘The Taming of the Shrew’. So I’m more than delighted to see a Monday performance that features something different. I’ve seen everything from a ballet to a Beatles band backed by the Reno Philharmonic, and they’ve all been wonderful. Check out the Showcase Series for what’s in store for Monday nights.

Keith Urban at Harvey’s Outdoor Arena in South Lake Tahoe July 21 & 22

July isn’t all about Shakespeare however. There’s so much going on, you could easily keep busy from dawn until dusk, and that’s just for our ‘Events Calendar‘. Summer is also concert season: at the Outdoor Arena at Harvey’s in South Lake Tahoe  – or in Reno: The Pioneer Center, the casinos or the Hawkins Amphitheater at Bartley Ranch to name but a few.

If your interests veer more toward local color, the Sierra State Parks will host a vintage fashion show at the historic Ehrman Mansion in Sugar Pine State Park. And those are just a few of the highlights. Links are provided next to the event for easy access to their websites. Also be sure to pick up the Tahoe Weekly located around town. There’s so much packed into July I couldn’t possibly keep up with all the summertime fun.

The above doesn’t include all the outdoor activities either. Peruse the blog page for our most recent adventures. I’ve lived here for over thirty years and I still discover new places to go. Explore the ‘Summer Recreation’ links to the right to find past articles on great hikes, bike rides and more!
